"At the sign of Battlehorns" is the second full length of Unholy Storm, an Italian band from Turin, after their 2005 debut " Our ancient vision ". This release offers us eight tracks of no compromise Black Metal, a solid work that despite the production is kinda clear and able to make us distinguish every instrument, it won't as well disappoint the fans of the purest form of this genre. In addition, the composition shows reminiscences of early Satyricon and the whole scene of that time.
After a very short intro made of majestic battle sounds, Nebiros' guitars are not to the fore but are composed to create that typical sulphuric atmosphere of post 90's Black Metal wave, with their raw sounds beloved by the most extremist fans of the genre. Worth mention are the bookend chords, which split the tight riffing, creating more melodic and dreaming moments.
Drumming is simple and standardized to the basics of the genre but well played and with very interesting parts which enrich the whole songwriting.
Enough to the fore are instead the bass guitar lines of Negatium Corporis, which don't only create a strong background for the guitars, but accompanies them with excellent phrasings.
Remarkable is the work done with vocals, where a raw and evil scream alternates with clean singing, whose epic style reminds of early Ulver. " Sol vej sol " has turned to be a little Italic gem! Much appreciated are also some parts sung in the local dialect.
Despite being an album belonging by now to almost two decades ago, the listening is highly recommended!
