Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal
Line Up:

Wandering through an autumnal forest in search of solace for the soul: this is the evocative image that greets the listener of Shadeborn, the debut EP from Resting Forest. The project, a high-profile Italian-American collaboration, brings together the vocals of Jörmundgand (In Corpore Mortis and Lilyum), American multi-instrumentalist Travisty (guitars, bass, and synths), and prolific Italian drummer Summum Algor (Adversam).
The result is exquisitely crafted Atmospheric Black Metal, expertly balancing melody and uncompromising attitude.
The immersion begins with the intro "Meltwater Streams," a prelude that serves as a liminal threshold to the heart of the forest. The calm, however, is soon shattered by "Sowing with Storm", a track that perfectly embodies the album's dichotomy, blending twilight melancholy with sudden bursts of violence.
The technical focus then shifts to "Into the White Eclipse," a track characterized by a tight riffing that never sacrifices atmospheric space, maintaining an original and vibrant compositional identity. "Haunt of the Pale Fires" is distinguished by a varied structure and unexpected pauses; here, the guitar licks verge on vintage melodic Heavy Metal, enriching the album's sonic fabric.
After the brief interlude of "In the Realm of Emptiness," a delicate passage of folk arpeggios supported by ethereal synths, we arrive at the final title track. In "Shadeborn," Travisty's creative flair emerges in all its complexity: an initially rhythmic song that evolves into a multitude of structural variations.
One of the EP's strengths is undoubtedly Jordmundgand's vocal performance: dynamic, full of emotion, and enhanced by beautifully harmonized clean inserts. Meanwhile, Summum Algor's drumming proves to be a never-trivial backing, capable of fluidly adapting to the numerous changes.
The production is solid and crystalline, allowing each instrument to breathe, enhancing the compositions' diverse nature.
Shadeborn is a compelling EP that avoids the shallows of monotony thanks to intelligent and dynamic songwriting. A highly recommended listen for fans of atmospheric black metal seeking substance beyond aesthetics.
