Debut EP for the Norwegian band Nidhög which offers a style typical of the second wave of Black Metal, going against the tide of modern productions that often seem to be made in series.
A genuine sound, without the spasmodic search for the "perfect" sound that most of the time is artificial and unnatural.
"Nidhoggr", the first track, is slow and rhythmic, vaguely reminiscent of the atmosphere of Burzum's Filosofem album, perhaps the duration is too short and soon the song fades while it seems to propose variations on the theme.
"Helheim" is the most aggressive and after an introductory part, cold and sharp guitars generate a full sound typical of Norwegian Black Metal that has never disappointed!
A rather basic but absolutely effective drumming, characterized by slow tempos and powerful double bass drum. The bass enriches the icy sound of the guitars with missing frequencies, albeit remaining in the background in terms of composition.
Good line and interpretation of the voice from the "True Norwegian Black Metal" timbre.
"Undergang" is very melancholy with some Depressive Black Metal tones and the following, "Searching for a Soul", stays in theme with a very atmospheric acoustic guitar arpeggio with Folk tones. Concludes "Stille tåke over Fjorden", a rather relaxing ambient song, judging by the meaning of the title, it should represent the fog in the Norwegian fjords.
In just over 20 minutes the band is able to prove their potential, perhaps a few arrangements and ideas are lacking to better structure the songs and to give greater continuity.
A good start therefore, ideal for all the nostalgic who listening to this album will take a dip in the past of at least 20 years.
