Cataplexy, active since 1992, gave birth to their second full-length "Devangelight" in 2012, the band isn't prolific, but it does not matter when the sporadic releases are quality products!
In the four years that separate this work from the previous one, the Japanese band has composed almost fifty minutes of Black Metal that seems to come directly from the Scandinavian fjords.
The marked Norwegian imprint is present in each song, the guitars work mainly in tremolo picking and create a succession of melancholic and enthralling riffs, giving life, without too many variations, to the typical Nordic sound of a few decades ago; all done convincingly.
Positive mention also for the drumming that uses blast beats, more violent double bass parts and interesting passages that break the linearity of the riffing; there are also atmospheric mid-tempo classics as if to further underline the sources of inspiration.
The bass, left in the background, is essential to dampen the mid frequencies of the guitars by combining them with the drums.
With his grave and rotten screaming, the vocalist contributes to the success of the compositions, enriching them with a mix of anger and desperation.
A production in which everything is distinguishable, but far from being crystalline or artificial, makes the sound of this album recall the glories of the 90s, a journey back in time to savour the Black Metal of the origins, an album that without inventing anything new will undoubtedly delight the most nostalgic!
