    After their 2019 debut full-length "Dark Legion," Japanese band Zantetsu return with a blistering EP produced by independent label Kagenkyo Record: just over 15 minutes of pure ferocity. Forget about clean sounds or perfect production: this is truly performed black metal, free of retouching and perfectionism. This is uncompromising Black Metal.
    The title track starts quickly, with blast beats and tight riffs, accompanied by a constant voice that resonates like a distant wail. The drummer does great work: an acoustic sound and a sincere, authentic performance... the drums are real here! The song's structure shifts from tense moments to more rhythmic ones.
    The second track, "Born in Flames," starts like a slap in the face and never lets up; it's aggressive yet melodic right to the end. The album closes with "Sorrow," a decidedly more laid-back track, as well as the longest of the lot. The song is upbeat, characterized by melodic guitar licks and supported by depressive-style vocals (perhaps a little too much undermined by the mix compared to the other instruments). The structure is fairly linear, with a further slowdown somewhere between melodic Heavy Metal influences of yesteryear.
    It's a shame about the short length, but then again, it's an EP. A band definitely worth keeping an eye on!
