Fallax
Year: 2021
During an honoured career lasting longer than 20 years, veterans Tenebrae Oboriuntur have released only three works : the first one, "Fallax", meets all the requirements to define the excellent skills of the Italian quartet, and it turns out to be a very interesting album. Recorded in 1998 but released only in 2021 through Hidden Marly Productions, Fallax still surprises for its compositional style which still sounds as if it was created in present times, while the sounds align to good level contemporary productions. Tenebrae Oboriuntur have finely composed 40 minutes of excellent music, where nothing is left to chance, expressing themselves at their best through bleak and gloomy atmospheres ; a very melodic Black Metal, which keeps the commendable rare feature to be never sappy or giddy. The band offers tight moments between dark and majestic synths, who are the main pillar of the whole album and do not spare medieval inspired parts with very evocative orchestrations. Guitars and bass guitar well support the opus without mistaking a shot. Drum doesn' t shine for its technical skills, probably it would be even inappropriate due to the sonority of the album in general, and it turns out to be the most "covered" instrument; surely, by simply pumping up its volume during the mixing process, it would have made the general sound more effective, dicreasing a little the synths who are continously present in the composition. Also the vocals, yet well managed, would have deserved more dynamics; a higher sparing with Cradle of Filth style screams, who were well known during the years when Fallax was recorded, would have made the album even more captivating. Without any doubt there is a great care for the details in this full length, which shows its evidence in the final result: the well molded atmospheres, more than all, define the whole project, solid and well build since its conception, pleasant to listen and enhanced by skilled musicians.
