“In the Abyssal Depths” is the first demo of the Malaysian one-man band Gerhana, led by M.L. Blackblood (Devourer of Light, Impious Blood, Thorns of Hate). The demo comprises three tracks of pure Black Metal influenced by the Scandinavian style of the 90s. Even if it's not many minutes of music, it is enough to get the message across: we descend straight into hell.

A dark and evil intro starts the first track, "With Eyes That Burn like a Dying Star", characterized right from the start by fast and machine-gun riffs and a guttural voice that recalls, in my opinion, “The Downward Descent” by Darvaza. After almost 7 breathless minutes, we find the second track, "Dominion Might", a tribute to the Black Metal of the early Dark Throne (Panzerfaust in particular), more classic and cadenced, but no less captivating. The inexorable descent into hell continues with the last piece, "In the Abyssal Depths," characterized by hammering riffs that continue for the entire song without peace or without stopping. The choice of drum machine samples makes the drumming very natural, but despite being well programmed, the dynamics are missing.

It is not easy to find bands like Gerhana, capable of evoking the atmospheres of the Black Metal of the golden age.

Ultimately, an excellent starting point for the one-man band Gerhana that, as the name says, wants to eliminate every glimmer of light, and succeeds very well, in a simple way, without too many pretensions or particular originality, but in a very effective way. Like an eclipse, an elementary but powerful and impactful phenomenon!
